When Alex Eala graduated from the Rafael Nadal Academy in 2023, she was just hoping for “someone good” to be their keynote speaker.
Little did she know that she would eventually find herself facing that very speaker at one of the biggest Grand Slams of the year.
Looking back after her historic 7-6, 6-2 Wimbledon victory over defending champion Iga Swiatek, Eala smiled as she recalled what happened that memorable day.
“I do remember I was so excited to see her because every year for graduation at the academy, they would get a guest — kind of like a guest sports star or athlete. That year, I remember we got Iga, and I was so excited because I was like, ‘Oh, hopefully we get someone good,’” Eala said.
“She threw her hat with us, and she sat next to me. I was so excited because I was like, ‘I’m in the pictures — we’re together.’”
It was a brief encounter, but one that stayed with the young Filipina.
Swiatek joined the graduates during the celebration, creating memories that Eala never imagined would become even more meaningful years later.
For Eala, sharing that moment with one of the game’s biggest stars was already enough to make the day unforgettable.
But what surprised her even more came when she received her diploma.
“Then, when I walked up and said hi to her when I got my diploma, she knew me, so I was also really excited about that,” Eala said.
Years later, the roles had drastically changed.
The teenager who once looked forward to meeting Swiatek at graduation walked onto one of tennis’ biggest stages not as a fan, but as an opponent, and one who wasn’t star-struck.
Her Wimbledon breakthrough eventually came against the same player who had once made her graduation even more memorable.
Eala’s recent conquest only showed how far she has gone.
From a graduate thrilled to meet one of her idols to a player capable of defeating one of the world’s best, Eala’s journey has been built one step at a time.
She continues to forge her own path at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London as she faces world No. 17 Jasmine Paolini of Italy on Monday.
