The Marikina City government has donated sewing machines, television sets, and hygiene kits to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)–Marikina City Jail as part of its continuing support for rehabilitation programs.
Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Teodoro, together with Marikina First District Rep. Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro, personally turned over the donations to the Marikina City Jail, led by Supt. Rodel Cadpino and Acting City Jail Warden Senior Inspector Atty. Rosebelle Vasquez.
The mayor said the four sewing machines are intended to help PDLs develop practical livelihood skills, particularly in making rugs, mats, and other products, which they can use to earn a living upon their release and reintegration into society.
Meanwhile, Mayor Maan said the hygiene kits were donated to help improve the PDLs’ daily needs and living conditions by supporting their health, sanitation, and personal cleanliness while inside the facility.
The city government also donated new television sets to provide PDLs with access to educational programs, information, and recreational activities as part of their rehabilitation.
According to the city government, the donations were made in response to the BJMP’s request for additional hygiene supplies and equipment to accommodate more PDLs participating in livelihood and skills development activities.
Mayor Teodoro assured the PDLs of the local government’s continued support for the city jail’s rehabilitation and reintegration programs, as well as its commitment to helping address their welfare and daily needs.
“Even behind bars, PDLs remain valued members of our community. The city government is fully committed to support programs and activities that will enable them to gain and nurture new skills, and hopefully boost their confidence and inspire them throughout their rehabilitation,” the mayor said.
“Every day is an opportunity to change your lives for the better. Huwag kayo mawalan ng pag-asa. Patuloy kayo magsikap para sa mas magandang kinabukasan,” the local chief executive added.
Currently, there are 846 male PDLs at the Marikina City Jail–male dormitory and 196 female PDLs at the female dormitory.
