Greece-based pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena produced his season-best mark in the outdoor season after clearing 5.75 meters at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open on Thursday in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Obiena, 30, needed all three attempts to clear the height and capture his second outdoor title of the season. He also reset the meet record of 5.74m set by Austin Miller of the United States in 2024 in the 10-man tournament.
The Asian Games gold medalist is coming off a victory at the Memoriał Czesława Cybulskiego in Poland last Monday, where he cleared 5.72m.
“Got 5.75m here at Eisenstadt, Austria for the W and new stadium record. After many, many many runs and 3rd attempt makes, we needed to call it a night after 11pm. Thank you very much for having me,” Obiena said in his social media post.
“Next up, Fly Athens.”
Owen Heard of Great Britain claimed the silver medal over Dan Barta of the Czech Republic via countback after both pole vaulters cleared 5.55m.
With two gold medals under his belt, Obiena’s confidence will be high as he sets his sights on the Fly Athens Street Pole Vault at the Panathenaic Stadium in Greece on 7 July.
