The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) must ensure that Filipinos in Venezuela are properly monitored, guided and assisted following the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela, according to Senator Christopher “Bong” Go.
Go said government agencies must ensure that Filipinos overseas, including overseas Filipino workers and other nationals living abroad, have access to clear advisories, emergency contact channels, and timely assistance during disasters, periods of political instability, or disruptions to public services.
“What matters is that our fellow Filipinos overseas know they have agencies they can rely on whenever they need assistance. Information must be clear, coordination must be prompt, and government agencies must always be prepared to support them,” Go said.
The senator said the DMW and DFA should work with the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá to keep communication lines open with Filipinos in Venezuela, issue timely safety reminders, and guide affected individuals and their families on where to seek help.
All safe and sound
The DFA earlier said there were no reported Filipino casualties following the earthquakes that hit Venezuela on 24 June 2026.
The agency said it was closely monitoring the situation through the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá, which serves as the Philippines’ mission covering Venezuela, and advised Filipinos in affected areas to move to safer locations, monitor local updates, and follow safety instructions from local authorities.
Reports citing the DFA also said the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá had been in contact with Filipino nationals in Caracas and Barinas, advising them to shelter safely in place and monitor local news. An estimated 74 Filipinos live in Venezuela, many of them serving as religious missionaries.
The earthquakes were reported as two strong tremors that struck in rapid succession near the coastal area west of Caracas, close to Morón in northern Venezuela.
