Truth without fear

The TRIBUNE’s enduring motto — Without Fear or Favor — is more than a slogan. It is a professional covenant.

History has an uncanny way of assigning meaning to dates. 30 June is one such date.

For Filipinos, it is a day of political transition — a constitutional moment when one administration yields to another, reaffirming that no public office belongs to any individual but only to the sovereign people. Power changes hands, and the institutions that safeguard democracy are expected to endure. The date reminds us that governments come and go, but principles must remain.

The date also signifies a remarkable milestone in world history. On 30 June 1934, the infamous Night of the Long Knives began in Germany. What started as a political purge quickly turned into a chilling lesson on what happens when lies replace truth, when institutions succumb to fear, and when dissent is silenced instead of examined. It became one of history’s enduring warnings that democracy does not collapse overnight. It weakens gradually whenever independent voices choose silence over courage.

Between these two historical markers lies a profound lesson.

One celebrates the peaceful transfer of authority under constitutional order. The other warns against the dangers of unchecked power and the suppression of independent voices. Together, they define the space where a free press must always stand.

It is therefore fitting that DAILY TRIBUNE celebrates its 26th anniversary on 30 June.

For 26 years, the newspaper has navigated changing administrations, shifting political tides, economic crises, pandemics and technological revolutions that have transformed journalism itself.

Governments have risen and fallen. Political alliances have shifted. Public opinion has oscillated with every election cycle. Yet the enduring responsibility of journalism has never changed: to seek out the facts, question power, explain complexities, and provide citizens with the information they need to govern themselves wisely.

Today, that responsibility is even more demanding. Across the country, citizens are calling for greater accountability from public officials, institutions, corporations and even the media itself. In an era where trust is hard-earned but easily lost, journalism must not only report the truth but also demonstrate every day that it deserves the public’s confidence.

The TRIBUNE’s enduring motto — Without Fear or Favor — is more than a slogan. It is a professional covenant.

“Without fear” means refusing to be intimidated by influence, popularity or authority. It demands the courage to ask difficult questions even when the answers are uncomfortable.

“Without favor” is equally demanding. It rejects partisan loyalty, personal bias and selective scrutiny. Journalism loses credibility not only when it fears power but also when it becomes too close to it. The greatest test of a newspaper is not how it reports on its adversaries but how honestly it reports on those with whom it may agree.

The DAILY TRIBUNE’s anniversary is therefore more than a celebration of longevity. It is a reaffirmation that independent journalism remains one of democracy’s strongest safeguards — not because it is infallible, but because it continually submits itself to the discipline of facts, accountability and public scrutiny.

History has shown what societies lose when fear governs the press. It has likewise shown what democracies gain when the press remains free to question every center of power without prejudice or privilege.

As the TRIBUNE enters its 26th year, it also celebrates the vision and steadfast leadership of its dynamic duo, Willie and Chingbee Fernandez, whose commitment has enabled the newspaper not only to endure but also to grow amid an increasingly challenging media landscape.

Together with its editors, reporters and staff, they deserve heartfelt congratulations for keeping alive a publication that continues to inform the public with independence, courage and professionalism.

A newspaper’s finest years are not measured by its age, but by its unwavering fidelity to the truth.

As George Orwell said, “Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed; everything else is public relations.”
