A single Chinese mother has become famous online for her risky occupation and devotion to her son, who has a medical condition.

Xu Junyun, 36, of Hefei, Anhui province, China, cleans, repairs and waterproofs the exteriors and windows of tall buildings, earning her the moniker “Spider Woman” from netizens.

Xu chose the work, which requires her to hang from buildings using ropes and pulleys, because it offers flexible hours and higher pay than the university graduate’s previous office job as a hotel finance supervisor, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Caring for her son, Xiaoyu, who has cerebral palsy, demands more time and a higher income to cover the cost of his treatment.

The Spider Woman has established herself in the male-dominated profession since switching to the job in 2018. She recently waterproofed the exterior of an office tower about 220 meters tall, according to SCMP.

Xu’s choice and sacrifices are paying off as Xiaoyu’s rehabilitation is progressing, and he is now attending a local primary school, SCMP reported.

Meanwhile, a man living on the 27th floor of a high-rise condominium in Yunnan province, China, recently climbed out of the window of his unit and began climbing down a water pipe.

A friend of the man, surnamed Xue, lives on the 26th floor. He heard Xue outside and pulled him into his unit. Xue was reportedly hallucinating and was taken to a local hospital, where he recovered a few days later.

It was later learned that Xue failed to properly cook the magic mushrooms he had eaten, causing him to hallucinate. Jianshouqing mushrooms are poisonous when undercooked.

Xue said he believed his family was inviting him to “train himself to cross the tribulation and attain immortality,” so he climbed out of the window, SCMP reported.

Fortunately, he was saved by his friend. Xue vowed never to eat magic mushrooms again.
