PNP eyes 9-k cops for EDSA protest

Over 9,000 policemen will secure the planned “White Ribbon March” at the EDSA People Power Monument tomorrow, 28 June, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said.
He directed the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and concerned regional offices to conduct a comprehensive security threat assessment.
“We have already initiated strategic security assessments and directed the National Capital Region Police Office, alongside concerned local units, to exercise maximum tolerance while strictly enforcing traffic management and civil disturbance protocols,” Nartatez said.
“Our priority is to ensure that the ‘White Ribbon Movement’ march at the EDSA People Power Monument remains completely peaceful, prevents any form of lawlessness, and causes minimal disruption to the commuting public and nearby business establishments,” he added.
Poll reforms sought
Religious and civil society groups, led by the Interreligious Leaders Council for National Transformation, have called for a nationwide march to push for electoral reforms, stronger government accountability, and action against corruption and political dynasties.
The gathering is expected to draw participants from faith-based organizations and civil society groups.
“While we respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the Philippine National Police will remain completely apolitical and focused solely on maintaining public order and safety during the scheduled June 28 mobilization,” Nartatez said in a statement.
The NCRPO, on the other hand, said that a total of 9,533 police officers will be deployed across Metro Manila.
“There is no threat. This is our proactive deployment,” NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said in a text message sent to reporters.
Eastern Police District acting director Brig. Gen. Melecio M Buslig Jr. said that they implemented comprehensive security operations to ensure the safe, orderly, and peaceful conduct of the Faith-Based Rally dubbed “White Ribbon March” on Sunday.
