Police have arrested the suspect seen in a viral video assaulting passengers aboard a jeepney in Muntinlupa City, an incident that left several commuters injured, including a senior citizen who required hospital treatment.
In a statement issued Thursday, the Muntinlupa City Police Station identified the suspect only by his alias “Vincent,” who was apprehended at around 2 a.m. on 25 June at Carzo Compound in Barangay Alabang following a follow-up police operation.
The arrest came a day after a video circulating on social media showed a shirtless man attacking passengers inside a jeepney that had left South Station in Alabang.
According to a witness, the shirtless suspect suddenly boarded the public utility vehicle. Moments later, about three men reportedly followed him into the jeepney and began punching him inside the vehicle.
Fearing the altercation would escalate, the passengers urged the elderly driver to continue driving away from the area.
However, the suspect allegedly turned his aggression toward fellow commuters, threatening and attempting to punch several passengers. Two senior citizens reportedly tried to shield other passengers from harm.
One of the elderly passengers sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Asian Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
The witness clarified that the jeepney driver, estimated to be between 70 and 80 years old, bore no responsibility for the incident, noting that he too was placed in danger during the commotion.
Authorities said criminal charges for physical injuries will be filed against the suspect, with inquest proceedings before the Office of the City Prosecutor scheduled later Thursday.
Police added that all injured passengers received assistance and are now in stable condition.
Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon confirmed the arrest in a social media post and said he had directed local police to intensify security operations in the area.
“Nahuli na po yung lalaking sumampa sa PUV at nag-assault sa mga pasahero,” Biazon said. “Nagbigay ako ng direktiba sa Muntinlupa Police na mag-intensify ng security operations sa area.”
The Muntinlupa police said they would continue investigating the incident to establish the full sequence of events and determine the participation of other individuals reportedly involved in the initial altercation inside the jeepney.
The Southern Police District and the city government have also ordered heightened police visibility and proactive security measures to help prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of commuters.###
