SB19 leader Pablo clarified his songwriting approach after a fan questioned his use of Filipino grammar in the group’s latest release, “Visa,” saying musical flow and performance sometimes require bending language rules.

Speaking during the launch of Sony Music Publishing Philippines on 24 February, Pablo said that while understanding grammar is important, creative freedom allows a song to communicate more effectively.

“Kasi po ako kapag nagsusulat ako mahalaga rin sa'kin yung performance. If it sounds good sa paper pero hindi siya madulas pakinggan kapag kinakanta ko, it needs revision,” he said.

“Doon po pumapasok yung creativity ng mga songwriters [and] artists alike pagdating sa kung paano nila mapapaganda yung tunog ng mga kanta.”

The discussion stemmed from a post on X, where a fan pointed out his interchange of “din” and “rin,” which does not strictly follow Filipino grammar conventions. Pablo had earlier responded online, explaining that the choice was deliberate and based on sound.

“Tho deliberate sya. Yun yung beauty ng music at poetry. Walang rules. Pero try mo kantahin. Kapag ‘din’ ang ginamit, hindi sya magiging madulas pakinggan,” he wrote.

He emphasized that effective songwriting goes beyond simply delivering a message.

“Effective po kasi siya eh. For you to be able to be heard, kailangan maganda yung marinig from you. Sa songwriting hindi lang naman mensahe [yung mahalaga], it’s the whole thing. Lahat ng rekados, nagco-compliment para maibigay yung mensahe ng kanta.”

Pablo also clarified that his remarks were meant to offer insight into his creative process, not to dismiss criticism. He said his approach varies depending on the type of composition.

“For context, if I am writing a song na conversational, I let the writing breathe… If it’s a ballad or a poetic one, mas leaning towards mga rules talaga.”

Released on 20 February via Sony Music Entertainment, “Visa” explores themes of access, privilege and the challenges Filipinos face in seeking opportunities abroad.

The group said the track was partly inspired by their experiences with visa denials during international tours.

"We were very affected by visa applications during our tour," Pablo revealed, expressing hope the song sparks conversations about better support for Filipino artists working overseas.

SB19 is set to conclude its world tour with Wakas At Simula: The Trilogy Concert Finale on 18 April at the SMDC Festival Grounds. The group will also perform at the DUNK Showcase in Japan this March.
