Shia LaBeouf was taken into police custody during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans after allegedly striking multiple patrons at R Bar and Royal Street Inn in the French Quarter.
According to a police report, the 39-year-old actor became increasingly agitated throughout the night and allegedly used homophobic slurs while assaulting two men. One of the alleged victims was local drag performer Jeffrey Damnit, who was in full makeup and drag at the time. Damnit told authorities that LaBeouf’s aggression appeared to be triggered by his appearance.
Videos circulating online reportedly show LaBeouf shoving one man to the ground and hitting another, possibly causing a nose injury, before bystanders restrained him until officers arrived at around 12:45 a.m.
Police said LaBeouf denied touching anyone when questioned. In footage shared online, he was heard saying, “These f–––––s put me in jail,” while identifying himself as Catholic.
A judge later released LaBeouf without requiring bond. He now faces two counts of simple battery.
The arrest adds to the actor’s history of legal troubles. LaBeouf was previously arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct in 2017 and 2020. In 2020, singer FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit alleging abuse during their relationship. The case was later settled.
Damnit expressed concern about possible professional repercussions for pursuing charges, citing the risks faced by individuals in alternative communities when challenging public figures.
Mardi Gras festivities continued across the French Quarter as news of the arrest spread.
