GENERAL SANTOS CITY — The General Santos City government and Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) are moving to fast-track the proposed ₱2.3-billion “mallengke” redevelopment, with construction expected to begin once preparatory requirements are completed.

Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao announced during a Facebook live stream that RLC is keen on accelerating the project to meet its target timeline. She said the private partner is pushing to avoid delays and proceed as soon as conditions on the ground allow.

The development gained momentum last week after the city formally signed an agreement with RLC for the redevelopment of the city’s central trading hub—an area envisioned to be transformed into a modern market-mall complex that blends traditional public market functions with commercial retail spaces.

City officials confirmed that preparatory activities are already underway, including plans for the relocation of affected vendors and the bidding process for the demolition of the existing structure. Mayor Pacquiao said vendors will be temporarily transferred to nearby areas while site clearing and construction preparations proceed.

City Administrator Shandee Llido-Pestaño stressed that vendor welfare remains a priority throughout the project’s implementation. In a message to The Snitch, she clarified that demolition will only proceed once vendors and stakeholders are properly relocated and accommodated.

The “mallengke” project is seen as a major urban redevelopment initiative aimed at modernizing General Santos City’s central market, improving sanitation and safety, and boosting local commerce while preserving the livelihoods of small traders.

City officials said further details, including construction timelines and final relocation arrangements, will be announced once all pre-construction requirements are completed.
