BAGUIO CITY — A mental health official in Baguio City called for greater sensitivity in discussing psychological struggles, emphasizing that public figures should avoid statements that may invalidate mental health concerns.

Dr. Ricky Ducas, mental health coordinator of the Baguio City Health Services Office, underscored what he described as a basic principle in mental health discourse: if one cannot offer help, one should refrain from causing harm.

“Pag wala kang magandang sasabihin, huwag mo na lang sabihin, mas lalo kung nasa posisyon ka,” Ducas said. (“If you have nothing good to say, it is better not to say anything, especially if you are in a position of influence.”)

Ducas explained that mental and emotional pain are highly subjective, noting that experiences vary widely among individuals. He said what may appear trivial to some may be deeply distressing to others.

The official also cautioned against comparing the resilience of different generations, arguing that such comparisons overlook changing social and environmental conditions.

According to Ducas, daily realities faced by younger generations — including heavy traffic, long commuting times, transport queues, and unpredictable weather — contribute to persistent stress levels that differ from those of previous decades.

He added that labeling younger people as “weak” fails to account for broader societal changes.

Ducas emphasized that constructive support and understanding are more beneficial than dismissive commentary, particularly in conversations involving mental health.
