The Senate of the Philippines has approved on third and final reading Senate Bill No. 1509, also known as the Philippine Geriatric Center (PGC) Act, a measure aimed at institutionalizing specialized healthcare services for senior citizens.
The proposed law calls for the establishment of a dedicated medical facility that will provide long-term, age-appropriate healthcare, including rehabilitation services, palliative care, and treatment for chronic illnesses commonly affecting elderly patients.
Lawmakers said the Philippine Geriatric Center is designed to complement existing legislation, such as the National Commission of Senior Citizens Act and the Regional Specialty Centers Act, both of which seek to protect and promote the welfare of older Filipinos.
During deliberations, legislators emphasized that advanced age is often accompanied by chronic medical conditions and cognitive impairments that require sustained and specialized medical attention.
By establishing a centralized institution focused exclusively on elderly care, the PGC is expected to improve access to affordable, comprehensive, and well-managed healthcare services for senior citizens nationwide.
Advocates of the measure said the center represents a significant step in reinforcing the State’s responsibility to ensure the well-being of older Filipinos, recognizing their contributions to society while addressing the increasing healthcare demands of an aging population.
