Police arrested two Chinese nationals and seized more than P8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during a routine checkpoint in Pangasinan province, authorities said.

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the operation in Barangay Poblacion demonstrates how disciplined police work protects the public and the economy.

Officers flagged a white Isuzu Elf closed van for inspection at approximately 5:30 p.m. and discovered 101 boxes of assorted cigarettes lacking proper documentation. The 5,050 reams have an estimated market value of P8.05 million.

Police identified the suspects as Wei Lin Hua, a businessman residing in Sampaloc, Manila, and Zhao Wang. Both are currently in custody and face charges related to smuggling.

Nartatez cited that while some view checkpoints as minor operations, alert police work often prevents major crimes. He added that smuggling undermines lawful businesses and deprives the government of revenue meant for public services.

The confiscated inventory included 2,450 reams of Farstar Kingsize, 1,250 reams of Modern 100 Black Menthol, and 1,350 reams of Modern Menthol 100s in various packaging.

The operation was a joint effort between the Labrador Police Station, the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office and the Bureau of Customs.
