The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show-cause order and suspended the license of an SUV driver caught on video using unauthorized blinkers and driving in a designated bike lane.

LTO Assistant Secretary Markus Lacalinao ordered a 90-day preventive suspension against the driver after a video of the incident, originally posted in the Visor Community, went viral.

The footage showed a sport utility vehicle equipped with blue flashing lights attempting to bypass heavy traffic by entering a lane reserved for cyclists.

The agency cited Presidential Decree 96, which strictly prohibits private vehicles from using sirens, blinkers, or similar devices. Such equipment is reserved exclusively for the military, police, fire departments and ambulances.

The driver and the registered owner of the vehicle are required to appear before the LTO’s Intelligence and Investigation Division on 23 January at 4 p.m. They must provide a verified explanation as to why they should not be charged with reckless driving, illegal use of unauthorized accessories, and disregarding traffic signs.

“The bike lane is intended for bicycles and should not be abused by other types of vehicles,” Lacalinao said. “Unauthorized equipment, such as excessively bright lights, can also distract other drivers and cause serious accidents.”

The LTO has placed an alarm status on the vehicle involved. Lacalinao warned that if the respondents fail to attend the hearing or submit an explanation, the agency will resolve the case based on the available evidence.

Lacalinao urged all motorists to respect the rights of other road users and stressed that the LTO will implement traffic laws without favoritism to ensure safety across Metro Manila.
