Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla warned Monday that local officials who use government-funded projects for self-promotion face administrative charges and preventive suspension.
Remulla urged the public to report “epal” leaders — a local term for officials who credit themselves for public works — noting that such actions are grounds for disciplinary measures.
“Administrative cases can be filed against them, and they can face penalties ranging from preventive suspension to full suspension,” Remulla said.
He clarified that complaints against elected and appointed barangay officials must follow the protocols established by the Local Government Code of 1991. Under the law, complaints against elective barangay officials, including chairpersons and youth council leaders, must be filed before the concerned city or municipal council.
