Authorities dismantled an illegal electric meter selling operation in Sta. Cruz, Manila, on Tuesday, recovering a dozen refurbished units belonging to the Manila Electric Company (Meralco).
The joint operation, conducted by the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) and Meralco, followed a series of surveillance activities. Investigators said the suspects stole electric meters, refurbished them, and resold the units online.
Meralco announced it will file criminal charges against the establishment involved in the trade.
“We commend the swift action of the PNP in addressing this illegal activity,” said Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications. “We remain committed to working closely with authorities to protect the integrity of electricity service and ensure public safety.”
The utility firm reminded the public that stealing and reselling power distribution materials violates the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act. Convictions under the law carry prison sentences and fines ranging from P50,000 to P100,000.
Additionally, individuals who buy or use stolen meters can be prosecuted under the Anti-Fencing Law of 1972.
Zaldarriaga urged the public to report suspicious activities involving power cables or meters through the MyMeralco app, the company’s social media accounts, or its 16211 hotline.
