Chess has vowed to produce bigger numbers than the last time it was played as the Philippines braces for a tough outing in the 13th ASEAN Para Games starting next week in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
Head coach James Infestio said they aim for more medals as they strive to be better the 13-7-15 gold-silver-bronze tally during the 2023 edition of the sportsfest in Cambodia.
“My answer has always been the same: We aim to be better. We will look at our previous record and aim to do better than the last time,” national team coach James Infestio said.
“Our victory isn’t just for us but for those who supported us and for the country.”
Darry Bernardo and Cheyzer Mendoza will be the strong contenders in this regional tournament for differently abled bodies after clinching six and five gold medals, respectively, in 2023.
More than the medals, Infestio wants to see his wards show consistency regardless of who they are facing.
Infestio is happy that as they enter this year’s ASEAN Para Games, they won’t rely on a few players to deliver in terms of medals.
“We want them to live in the moment, face the challenges, work for the solution and give their best,” Infestio said.
“Back then, Sander Severino was the face of Philippine para chess. Now, we have Darry Bernardo. On the women’s side, it won’t be just Cheyzer because Kyla Jane Langue has arrived.”
