The holiday feasts may be over, but house chores are still overwhelming!

AHolidays decorations, extra kitchen and living room items and holiday gifts can quickly overwhelm your space. Just looking at the mess can feel exhausting. To make the transition easier, here are practical tips to help you organize your home amid post-holiday chaos.

Start with a reset, not a renovation

Say goodbye to Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths as your home slowly returns to its original state. Pack away serving dishes and seasonal décor and store them properly. Keep similar items together and label storage boxes clearly to make decorating easier next year.

Note: If you plan to redesign or refresh your home, do it after removing holiday decorations. A clean, bare space helps you visualize possible changes and additions more clearly.

Focus on high-impact areas first

Prioritize spaces that affect daily living — entryways, kitchen counters, living rooms and bedrooms. Decluttering these areas first instantly restores order and creates a calm atmosphere, especially when unexpected visitors drop by.

Note: Tackle one area at a time. Be gentle with yourself, especially for moms and caregivers who are juggling multiple responsibilities.

Use the three-box method

Reuse large boxes from grocery runs or gift packages instead of throwing them away. Label them “Keep,” “Donate” and “Discard.” This method speeds up decision-making and reduces second-guessing. If you haven’t used an item in a year, it’s usually safe to let it go.

Note: Always keep recycling in mind. Decluttering responsibly helps protect the environment.

Tackle gifts thoughtfully

Filipinos are naturally sentimental, often holding on to items we may never use. The truth is, not every holiday gift needs to stay. Accept gifts with gratitude, but keep only those that genuinely serve a purpose or bring joy. Donate duplicates or unused items while they’re still in good condition.

Note: This applies to gift-givers too — don’t be offended if a gift is donated, especially when the intention is to help others.

Create simple storage systems

For items you plan to display or use regularly, invest in baskets, drawer dividers and clear containers. Simple storage solutions help maintain order and prevent clutter from returning.

Note: Decluttering can be tiring, so work at your own pace. Short 15- to 30-minute sessions with breaks in between can help avoid burnout.

Decluttering after the holidays doesn’t have to be painful. By taking small, intentional steps and focusing on what truly matters, you can turn post-holiday chaos into a peaceful, organized home. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the goal.
