The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has renewed its warning against the theft of power cables and other electrical facilities following a recent incident in Quezon City that caused a temporary power interruption and left a suspect critically injured.
In a statement issued on 5 January, Meralco said a 37-year-old man attempted to steal power cables at around 3 a.m. on 4 January, triggering a brief disruption of electricity service to nearly 8,000 customers. Power was restored by 7 a.m. after Meralco crews promptly repaired the affected lines.
The suspect reportedly sustained flashover burns and fell from a tree during the attempted theft. He was rushed to a hospital and remains in critical condition.
Meralco senior vice president and head of networks Froilan J. Savet said the incident highlighted the serious dangers posed by illegal interference with energized facilities. Beyond service disruptions, he said such acts expose individuals to life-threatening risks due to the high voltage carried by power cables and related infrastructure.
The utility also reiterated its call for public cooperation in maintaining safe and reliable electricity service, urging residents to report any suspicious activities involving Meralco facilities.
Meralco further reminded the public that wire theft is a criminal offense under Republic Act No. 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties including imprisonment and fines.
Customers may report electricity-related concerns through the MyMeralco app, the company’s official social media channels, text hotlines, or the Meralco hotline.
