The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recorded 96 fire incidents nationwide from 6:00 p.m. on 31 December 2025 to 6:00 a.m. on 2 January 2026, as Filipinos welcomed the New Year.
According to the agency, 30 of the incidents were classified as non-structural and vehicular cases, while 66 were structural fires — a significant increase from the 52 structural incidents recorded during the same period in 2024.
Authorities identified faulty electrical wiring and accidents involving firecracker stalls as among the primary causes of the reported fires.
Despite the uptick in incidents, BFP Spokesperson and Public Information Service Chief FSupt. Anthony Arroyo emphasized that the agency’s heightened preparedness and swift action helped prevent further damage and casualties.
“Naging successful naman ang ating pag-dispatch kasi talagang naagapan agad ‘yong mga pwede maging sunog, nakaantabay agad. Kahit hindi ginamitan ng firetrucks nandoon na, tulong-tulong na lang,” Arroyo said.
(“The dispatch was successful because our teams were able to respond immediately to potential fires. They were already on standby. Even without the use of firetrucks, our personnel were already on site, working together to manage the situation.”)
The BFP reiterated its reminder to the public to strictly observe fire safety measures, particularly during large celebrations and holidays when electrical overload, pyrotechnics, and careless handling of flammable materials typically heighten fire risks.
