On the third floor of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, color begins to behave differently.

When Painting Rules opens on 3 February 2026, visitors are invited into the immersive world of German artist Peter Zimmermann, whose work bends light, surface, and perception into something both digital and deeply human. This exhibition marks Zimmermann’s first institutional solo show in the Philippines, presented by The M Museum in collaboration with Nunu Fine Art of Taipei and New York.

Zimmermann’s paintings do not simply sit on the wall — they seem to hover, glow, and breathe. Built through layers of oil paint or epoxy resin, his large-scale works radiate a liquid clarity, where gradients melt seamlessly into one another and color appears suspended in motion. What looks smooth and effortless is the result of a complex process rooted in transformation and deconstruction.

Born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1956 and now based in Cologne, Zimmermann began his career in the 1980s by reworking familiar printed materials — book covers, atlases, dictionaries — into abstract paintings sealed in epoxy. Over time, his practice evolved to incorporate digital imagery. Photographs, film stills, and diagrams are broken down through graphic algorithms, stripped of their original meaning, and rebuilt layer by layer on canvas. For Zimmermann, digital images may be composed of code and logic, but when altered and reimagined, they can still carry emotion.

This dialogue between precision and expression defines Painting Rules. Viewers encounter works that feel both calculated and intuitive, where technology becomes a tool for rediscovering the expressive power of painting.

The exhibition also features Palladium (2022), one of Zimmermann’s most recent works, now part of The M Museum’s permanent collection. Donated by the artist, the piece stands as a quiet anchor within the exhibition — an emblem of his ongoing relationship with the Philippines.

That relationship has been shaped over years of visits, particularly through Art Fair Philippines, where Zimmermann’s works, shown by Nunu Fine Art, found resonance among Filipino collectors. This exhibition deepens that connection, offering local audiences a closer and more expansive encounter with his practice.

Before the galleries open to the public, Zimmermann will also lead a student workshop at the museum. Using custom-designed stickers, participants will collaboratively create a mural alongside a wall installation that merges his current painting style with his earlier installation-based work. The project emphasizes participation, experimentation, and shared creativity — inviting young artists not just to observe art, but to help shape it.

Painting Rules runs from 4 February to 30 April 2026 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila The M Museum in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.. Within its luminous surfaces and layered depths, the exhibition asks viewers to reconsider how images are made  — and how painting continues to evolve in a digital age.
