Philippine National Police (PNP) officials have launched an investigation into the discovery of P1.1 billion worth of smuggled cigarettes found during a New Year’s Eve operation in Batangas City originally targeting car thieves.
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered the force to identify the owners of the contraband, which was discovered Wednesday in Batangas City.
“This case does not end in the confiscation of these smuggled cigarettes,” Nartatez said during an inspection of the seized goods. “I have already ordered a thorough investigation into this to identify and build strong cases against those responsible.”
The discovery was made by the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) while tracking a red Hyundai Accent reported stolen in Las Piñas City. Using GPS technology, HPG operatives led by Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan tracked the vehicle to a site in Balete, Batangas City.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the stolen car alongside several trucks and container vans loaded with the illicit tobacco. No arrests were made at the scene, but Nartatez said follow-up operations are underway.
The PNP is coordinating with the Bureau of Customs to trace the origin of the shipments. Nartatez said the scale of the seizure suggests a link to larger smuggling syndicates.
“These smugglers are robbing the Filipino people of tax and other financial obligations,” Nartatez said. “Their illegal activities have a serious economic impact.”
The acting chief described the operation as a “symbolic warning” for 2026, noting that the successful use of GPS tracking in this case highlights the PNP’s push toward modernization.
