Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) have the power to turn their lives around, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director general Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said on New Year’s Day, which he spent with them.
Catapang said life should be taken one day at a time, stressing that the past does not define the future and that the kind of life they will live depends on the choices they make.
He urged the PDLs to embrace the opportunities for learning, rehabilitation, and personal reflection available to them.
“You have the power to transform your story,” Catapang said.
He also addressed BuCor personnel, commending them for the dedication they have shown despite the challenges they face in their work.
“Each day you don the uniform, you embody the values of discipline, compassion and integrity. Your role transcends the walls of correctional facilities — you are mentors, guides and, at times, a beacon of hope for those we serve,” he said.
He strongly urged the personnel to continue striving for excellence and to seize every opportunity to uplift and reform lives.
“Let us remain committed to our mission of realizing lives and empowering individuals. Together, we can foster an environment where change is not just a word but a tangible reality,” Catapang said.
