The historic victory of I’mPerfect at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has been hailed as more than an awards-night milestone, marking a significant moment for disability representation and inclusive storytelling in Philippine cinema.

In a statement, the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) lauded the film’s success, citing its powerful role in advancing the rights, visibility, and artistic potential of persons with disabilities.

Central to the film’s triumph was Krystel Go, whose Best Actress win signaled a breakthrough not only in her acting career but also for the broader community of persons with Down syndrome and persons with disabilities. Her performance challenged long-standing limitations in casting and storytelling, reinforcing the message that talent and passion transcend labels.

In her acceptance speech, Go underscored the deeper meaning of the recognition:

“Thank you so much for this opportunity—for giving us a voice and for showing that we, persons with Down syndrome, are also capable of acting.

Above all, Lord, You fulfilled my dream—our dream—to become artists.

Thank you so much.”

The NCDA said the film’s Best Picture win represents a meaningful step toward a more inclusive Philippine film industry. Rather than treating disability as a plot device, the film places persons with disabilities at the center of the narrative, portraying them as dreamers, performers, and equals.

According to the council, the film affirms that representation should go beyond tokenism and instead reflect truthful, humane storytelling that mirrors real experiences.
