2025 didn’t just give us C-dramas; it gave us an era. From soft, slow-burn yearning at the start of the year to heart-racing danger and passion by December, the year proved why it deserves a spot in C-drama history.

1. ‘The First Frost’

The year opened quietly but powerfully with The First Frost, an urban romance directed by Qu You Ning and starring Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan. Based on Zhu Yi’s novel, it follows former high school classmates Wen Yi Fan and Sang Yan, unexpectedly reunited under the same roof. What starts as emotional distance slowly turns into intimacy after Sang Yan discovers Wen Yi Fan’s sleepwalking secret.

2. ‘Speed and Love’

Closing the year with a bang was Speed and Love, an action romance directed by Yu Zhongzhong and Zhao Xiaolei, starring Esther Yu, He Yu, and Wu Yige. Adapted from Shi Jiuyuan’s novel, it follows Jiang Mu as she reunites with her long-lost brother Jin Chao, only to find him living a dangerous life in Thailand. Amid violence and moral gray areas, love blooms under extreme pressure. Jin Zhao became December’s final yearner — intense, fearless, and willing to risk everything for love.

3. ‘The Best Thing’

Directed by Che Liangyi and led by Zhang Linghe and Xu Ruohan, The Best Thing delivered warmth and healing. Gentle doctor He Suye and hotel manager Shen Xifan slowly fall in love through everyday encounters, proving that love doesn’t need grand gestures — sometimes it’s found in quiet care and shared healing.

4. ‘Legend of the Female General’

This historical romance, directed by Chiang Ka-chun and starring Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei, brought strength and devotion to the screen. Adapted from Chong Sheng Zhi Nv Jiang Xing, it follows He Yan, a reborn female general, and Commander Xiao Jue as they fight corruption and protect their homeland.

5. ‘The Prisoner of Beauty’

Led by Song Zu’er and Liu Yuning, The Prisoner of Beauty transformed a political marriage into an emotional slow burn. Adapted from Penglaike’s novel, it follows Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao as they move from calculated alliance to genuine love, balancing national duty with personal happiness.

6. ‘Love in the Clouds’

A historical fantasy romance co-directed by Zhi Zhu and Peng Xuejun, Love in the Clouds delivered xianxia intrigue and power-couple energy. Neo Hou and Lu Yuxiao star as Ji Bozai and Ming Yi, rivals turned lovers navigating hidden identities, justice, and emotional tension within the Azure Cloud Tournament.

7. ‘Love’s Ambition’

Directed by Chen Chang and starring Zhao Lusi and William Chan, Love’s Ambition explored the cracks beneath a seemingly perfect marriage. As secrets unravel, the couple confronts who they really are — individually and together — offering a mature, layered take on modern love.

8. ‘The White Olive Tree’

This military romance stars Chen Zheyuan and Liang Jie as a journalist and an explosive engineer drawn together in a conflict-ridden land. Based on Jiu Yuexi’s novel, the drama proves love can bloom even in chaos, through shared ideals, courage, and emotional resilience.

9. ‘Legend of Zang Hai’

Directed by Zheng Xiaolong and Cao Yiwen, this historical drama stars Xiao Zhan as Zang Hai, a man driven by vengeance and justice. Using intelligence, strategy, and patience, he dismantles corruption, making this one of 2025’s most compelling non-romantic arcs.

10. ‘Coroner’s Diary’

Rounding out the year’s lineup is Coroner’s Diary, a historical suspense drama starring Landy Li and Ao Ruipeng. Qin Wan, the daughter of the Minister of Justice, uses her forensic expertise to solve crimes and clear her father’s name, blending mystery, intelligence and emotional depth.
