A bus veered onto a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk Thursday afternoon and crashed into a building, knocking down scaffolding and injuring at least one person, authorities said.
The incident happened around 4:35 p.m. on East 41st Street, between Lexington and Park avenues, near Grand Central Terminal. Police said the bus, traveling eastbound, suddenly lost control and mounted the sidewalk before smashing into the structure.
Witnesses described hearing loud crashes as metal scaffolding collapsed, prompting pedestrians to run for cover. Debris scattered across the sidewalk and part of the roadway as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Fire officials said one person was taken to Bellevue Hospital. No passengers were onboard the bus at the time of the crash.
Videos shared online showed the front portion of the bus lodged against the building while its rear remained partly in the street. Police identified the vehicle as a Coach USA bus operating on a route linked to Newark Liberty International Airport.
The driver, a man in his 30s, was not immediately reported injured. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the bus to lose control.
Coach USA said it is reviewing the incident and stressed that safety remains its top priority.
