Around 1,200 households and businesses in Cagbalete Island, Mauban, Quezon are set to gain reliable 24/7 electricity following the signing of a Microgrid Service Contract (MSC) between the National Power Corporation (NPC) and the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for the Hybrid Microgrid System Project.
Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin and Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara witnessed the ceremonial signing, which the Department of Energy (DoE) described as a major step toward expanding sustainable and dependable power access in remote and off-grid areas.
More than just infrastructure
“This project is more than just infrastructure, it is about dignity, opportunity, and a fair chance at development for every Filipino family,” Garin said.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Power Corporation, Meralco, our local government partners, and all those who helped make this Microgrid Service Contract a reality. By working together, we are turning Cagbalete’s long-held dream of 24/7 electricity into a concrete and lasting achievement.”
Round-the-clock power
The hybrid microgrid will supply round-the-clock power through renewable energy, battery storage, and conventional generation.
According to the DoE, continuous electricity is expected to boost households, public services, and local industries, including fisheries, small enterprises and tourism.
The DoE said it continues to work with NPC, distribution utilities, electric cooperatives, and private proponents to accelerate electrification in off-grid islands through microgrids and other energy solutions aligned with national clean energy and total electrification goals.
