How to have mindful holiday indulgence: Tips from National Nutrition Council
The NNC continues to remind the public that excessive eating and drinking can take a toll on one’s health.

According to the NNC, mindful eating, moderation, and balanced meals guided by the Pinggang Pinoy (Filipino Plate) model are essential for maintaining good nutrition during holidays.
The Philippines boasts of having the so-called longest Christmas season in the world.
As early as the -ber months hit, lights and decorations are set up and holiday promos fill stores and screens, signalling the start of months-long celebrations centered around family, friends and, more often than not, food.
From lechon and bibingka to festive drinks, the season is filled with indulgence and togetherness. While these moments bring warmth and joy, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) continues to remind the public that excessive eating and drinking can take a toll on one’s health.
According to the NNC, mindful eating, moderation and balanced meals guided by the Pinggang Pinoy (Filipino Plate) model are essential for maintaining good nutrition during the holidays.
The Pinggang Pinoy was developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology as a visual guide to a balanced meal.
Keren Faye Gaya, Nutrition Officer of NNC MIMAROPA, explained in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency that Pinggang Pinoy means “half of the plate should be filled with vegetables and fruits, one-fourth with protein sources such as meat or fish and the remaining one-fourth with carbohydrates like rice or pasta.”

Simple habits like watching portions, drinking enough water, and keeping the body moving support digestion and steady energy.

Instead of deep-frying, she also advised choosing healthier cooking methods such as steaming, grilling or baking.
“It is advisable to limit the use of oil in cooking. Opt for healthier methods such as baking, grilling or steaming to promote better nutrition,” she explained.
“Do not forget to engage in regular physical activity and drink alcohol only in moderation. We all know that alcoholic beverages are often abundant during the holiday season, so it is important to drink responsibly.”
Overindulgence, particularly in alcohol and rich food, can strain the liver, disrupt digestion and contribute to unwanted weight gain or other health concerns.
The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, and that includes sharing good food with loved ones. Practicing mindful indulgence helps savor meals, while staying comfortable throughout the season without feeling guilt or discomfort. Simple habits like watching portions, drinking enough water and keeping the body moving support digestion and steady energy.
