TACLOBAN CITY — The 8th Infantry Division (8ID) of the Philippine Army launched a hot pursuit operation against members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) after a clash early Wednesday morning resulted in the deaths of two soldiers.
The encounter occurred around 1:30 a.m. in Barangay Babaclayon, San Jose De Buan, Samar. The soldiers, who were members of the 8th Military Intelligence Battalion, were conducting validation on the alleged presence of armed men in the community when they were met with “deliberate and hostile fire” from the enemy, according to an 8ID statement.
The military identified the rebels as part of the remnant group of Squad 3/SALIBAD, Yakal Platoon of the Sub-Regional Committee Browser under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.
The 8ID stated that information from civilians indicated the communist rebels had forcibly occupied private properties and were using them as hideouts.
The Army accused the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA of violating international humanitarian law by occupying private property for military use.
It added that the two soldiers were targeted by the rebels while the government troops were maneuvering to shield civilians caught in the danger area.
Philippine Army commanding general Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete extended his condolences to the families of the two fallen soldiers, assuring them of the Army’s full support.
“Our fallen soldiers served with courage and dedication, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Nafarrete said in a statement.
“Security operations will continue, to ensure the protection of local communities,” he added.
Nafarrete also called on the remaining members of the CPP-NPA to abandon armed struggle and pursue peaceful reintegration into society.
