For as long as his schedule permits, Miguel Tabuena will never say no to representing the country.
During the thanksgiving dinner organized by his sponsor, DigiPlus Interactive Corp. on Thursday, Tabuena revealed that he is very much willing to play for the national team in the 20th Asian Games in Japan from 19 September to 4 October next year.
The 31-year-old Tabuena said he is always ready to play for the country whenever his busy schedule in the Asian Tour permits. In fact, he saw action in the Rio de Janeiro in 2016 in which he finished 53rd in the men’s individual stroke play event.
“As long as the schedule permits me and as long as there’s nothing clashing with the Asian Tour schedule or with the LIV schedule, why not? It’s always an honor to represent the country and it won’t only just be me,” Tabuena told DAILY TRIBUNE during the event where he received P2.5 million from ArenaPlus following his triumphant performance in the International Series Philippines presented by BingoPlus last month.
Tabuena said he will be spending the remainder of 2025 with his family after an eventful season that saw him rising to No. 3 in the Asian Tour Order of Merit behind Kasuki Higa of Japan and Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe.
“I was supposed to play one more event in Saudi next week but I think I’m going to rest. I’ve been through a lot this year. I achieved a lot and I also have to know when to rest and be content with what I’ve done this year,” said Tabuena, whose last finish was 11th place in the PIF Saudi International.
“Golf-wise, I will take a break for a few days but in terms of being fit and working on my body, that never stops.”
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said they are ready to rally behind Tabuena and the rest of the Filipino golfers.
“When you’re a scratch player or a pro, it’s just a matter of time when you’ll win. What’s important for us is that they know and Miguel knows that the Philippine Sports Commission is here to help all the golfers,” Gregorio said.
