Malacañang on Tuesday defended First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos from criticism over her public appearances while typhoon “Uwan” pummeled large parts of the country, saying her engagements were cultural events meant to uplift Filipino pride, not leisurely affairs.

Palace Press Officer and Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the First Lady’s schedule over the weekend consisted of formal events that promoted Filipino artistry and national identity.

“The events attended by the First Lady were not just private parties,” Castro said. “She was not going to resorts to swim or wearing a costume like Snow White to party. These were recognitions of our fellow Filipinos while the President and Cabinet secretaries were responding to the needs of our countrymen.”

Mrs. Marcos recently attended the launch of the Philippine First Lady Portraits Book and a performance by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Vocal Ensemble, both held at the Goldenberg Mansion in the Malacañang complex.
