Amid the series of calamities that hit the country, Senator Imee Marcos on Tuesday, 11 November, called on various government agencies to grant at least a one-month grace period for loan payments to typhoon victims.
Marcos made the announcement after the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) announced a three-month loan moratorium for emergency loans of its members and pensioners who were severely affected by Typhoons Tino and Uwan.
According to the senator, the extension should also include workers in the private sector, cooperatives, and small business owners.
"It's not just government employees who are affected, we also need to help all workers and small business owners because in times of disaster, they are the first to lose their income," Marcos said.
"That's why I'm calling on Pag-IBIG, Social Security System, Small Business Corporation, Department of Agriculture, and other institutions to provide at least a month extension," the senator continued.
Marcos appealed to "not deduct any more and give them their full salaries so they can breathe and recover from the damage caused by the typhoons."
"They are not only victims of the typhoon, they are also victims of the government's botched flood control project. At least now, let's not disappoint them and help them recover," she added.
Based on the latest report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, Typhoon Uwan has affected over 2.3 million individuals in 15 regions.
The Typhoon has also left six people dead and 13 hurt.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos declared a state of national calamity on 5 November following the widespread destruction caused by Typhoon Tino.
The declaration allows for faster and more coordinated relief, recovery, and rehabilitation efforts nationwide.
