A Philippine Air Force (PAF) Super Huey helicopter crashed Tuesday in the vicinity of Loreto, Agusan del Sur, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom).
Reports said that the aircraft was en route to Butuan City as part of a mission to provide Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR), supporting relief efforts for communities affected by tropical storm “Tino.”
EastMinCom spokesperson Lt. Col. Salvacion Evangelista confirmed the crash, stating the helicopter was one of a four-aircraft formation that departed earlier in the day from Davao City.
The formation was conducting HADR and Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) missions within the Tactical Operations Group (TOG) 10 area.
Communication with one of the helicopters was lost mid-flight, prompting an immediate search and rescue response.
“Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing. The Command is working closely with emergency response teams in the area,” EastMinCom said in a statement, appealing for public cooperation and prayers as efforts to locate the crew continue.
The PAF also confirmed the mishap in a separate statement, noting that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
“A thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the circumstances and cause of this accident,” the PAF said, adding that verified details will be released as soon as they become available.
The Super Huey helicopter is a vital asset often used for relief operations, troop transport, and medical evacuation missions, especially in calamity-affected areas.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of personnel on board the aircraft, their identities, or any information regarding casualties.
