Living the life beyond the spotlight: Celebrities who found fulf illment away from showbiz

For many stars, the glitz and glamour of show business can be intoxicating — but for others, true happiness lies outside the limelight. Over the years, several Filipino celebrities have chosen to step away from acting and public attention to build quieter yet deeply meaningful lives. From careers in finance to advocacy work, from family-focused living abroad to entirely new passions, these former stars remind us that life after fame can be just as rewarding — if not more so.

Brothers abroad: Carlo and Leandro Muñoz

Once among the most promising names in Philippine television and film, brothers Carlo and Leandro Muñoz now live far from the red carpet in the United States.

Leandro, once paired with Judy Ann Santos in Isusumbong Kita sa Tatay Ko and Claudine Barretto in Saan Ka Man Naroroon, admitted that the politics and “fake people” of showbiz contributed to his decision to leave. Now 44 and based in Fairfield, California, he has built a family and a career alongside his wife, Sheryl Espero, a former nurse turned regional vice president for Primerica Financial Services. Leandro himself is part of the company’s team.

Carlo, who starred in films like Yamashita: The Tiger’s Treasure and Got 2 Believe, is happily married to Meg “Enid” Reyes, his co-star in a memorable PLDT commercial. Together with their three children, Carlo has built a life away from the cameras. Like his brother, he joined Primerica after years of dabbling in music and other ventures. For the Muñoz brothers, leaving showbiz meant trading scripted drama for the real joys of stability, family and community.

From Darna to philanthropist: Nanette Medved

Nanette Medved’s name is forever etched in Philippine pop culture history for portraying Darna in the 1991 film. But her true heroism came after she left showbiz in 2000 following her final project with Fernando Poe Jr., Ang Dalubhasa.

Since then, Nanette has become a philanthropist and entrepreneur, founding Hope in a Bottle and Hope in a Star — initiatives that have built classrooms and supported thousands of students across the Philippines. For her, advocacy work is not just a calling but a joy. “I think that it’s because I love what I do. We all kind of choose to serve in our own way, and this is the way I choose to serve,” she explained.

Though fans still hope for her return, Nanette has made peace with her choice: “No regrets… I have an amazing family, a great life, and I get to do this really meaningful work.”

Growing up and moving on: Serena Dalrymple

Serena Dalrymple was once the pint-sized darling of Philippine entertainment, remembered for her spunky roles in commercials, films and TV. But after 14 years in the industry, she left acting to secure a pension from her late father, a U.S. military officer.

After earning her Business Administration degree in Manila, Serena migrated to San Francisco, pursued graduate studies in London, and went on to build a corporate career in Los Angeles — working with Paramount Pictures, Viacom, and other global companies. In 2024, she welcomed her first child with her husband, Thomas Bredillet.

Far from the spotlight, Serena now lives a life defined not by fame but by family and professional achievement. When asked about returning to acting, she has always been firm: she has no plans of going back.

A fresh start in Canada: Precious Lara Quigaman and Marco Alcaraz

Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman and actor Marco Alcaraz have embraced a new chapter in Canada with their three children. The couple, who married in Vancouver in 2011, recently returned there to mark their 14th wedding anniversary and retrace the steps of their intimate post-nuptial shoot.

The move, Lara shared, was both symbolic and practical: a chance to grow together as a family while staying open to “special projects” back home. Despite facing rumors of separation in 2024, Lara joked that their only “breakups” happen when one of them heads to the bathroom.

In Canada, the family rang in the New Year grateful for God’s faithfulness, with Lara writing on Instagram: “New mercies! Thank You, God, for Your faithfulness… Hello 2025.”

Life after fame

Whether by choice, circumstance, or a quest for deeper fulfillment, these celebrities prove that stepping away from fame doesn’t mean stepping away from purpose.

Their journeys remind us that while fame can be fleeting, the pursuit of happiness, meaning, and love is timeless.
