GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Sophia Rose Garra of Malabon made a huge splash as she clinched her fourth gold medal in the swimming competition of the 2025 Batang Pinoy at the Antonio Acharon Sports Complex here on Wednesday.
The 13-year-old Garra made a lot of heads turn, clocking one minute and 6.60 seconds in the girls’ 12-13 100-meter backstroke for a new meet record and her fourth gold medal in this prestigious grassroots event organized by the Philippine Sports Commission.
With four gold medals hanging around her neck, the soft-spoken De La Salle Araneta student is on her way to emerge as one of the meet’s most outstanding athletes.
“It will be my last time in the 12-13 division so I am at my peak right now,” said Garra, who erased her previous-best of 1:08.77 that she tallied in the previous edition of the Batang Pinoy in Puerto Princesa City.
Jordane Sales of Manila City settled for second place with 1:09.78 while Arianne Lim got third place with a time of 1:12.73.
Challenging Garra for the title of most bemedaled athlete is FJ Catherine Cruz of Mabalacat, Pampanga, who also holds four golds to her name.
Her latest conquest came in the girls’ 16-17 100m backstroke, clocking in 1:07.93 for the new meet record and eclipsing her previous-best of 1:08.32 last year.
Maxine Uy of Bacolod City finished with 1:08.70 for the silver medal while Kristine Uy of Manila clinched the third place with a time of 1:10.10.
