More Pinoys trapped in SEA scam hubs — DFA

The number of Filipinos falling victim to scam hub operations in Southeast Asian countries remains “fluid,” Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac said Monday.
In a press briefing, Cacdac said the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) were still validating reports that the number of victims could exceed the 222 active assistance requests reported by the DFA on Sunday.
“We cannot be so naive as to say that the story ends there,” Cacdac said. “Both the DMW and DFA are still in the process of finding out if there are more Filipinos working in the scam hubs, at least in Cambodia.”
Cacdac said the estimate is 200 to 300 Filipinos may be at KK Park in Myawaddy in Myanmar and at a known global scam hub in the Mae Sot district of Thailand.
Of the 222 active cases, nine victims are in the custody of the Philippine Embassy in Yangon, 66 have crossed into Mae Sot, and 154 others arrived in Mae Sot from Myanmar on Sunday night.
“We have a Migrant Workers Office in Bangkok, so we are in full force coordinating with the embassy in Bangkok,” he said.
No timeline has been set for the victims’ return to the Philippines, but their repatriation is being processed as many of them had their passports taken by their employers.
Filipinos are commonly lured to such jobs through ads in social media and messaging apps where illegal recruiters promise high salaries to work as customer service representatives.
