Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitted ash twice within a 24-hour period, according to the latest bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday.
Phivolcs said the ash emissions lasted between four and 69 minutes, with 10 volcanic quakes recorded from Wednesday midnight to Thursday midnight.
The volcano also emitted plumes reaching up to 250 meters high before drifting west-southwest.
Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 2,058 tonnes per day as of 22 October, indicating continued activity beneath the volcano. Phivolcs added that the Kanlaon edifice remains inflated, signaling ongoing unrest.
Between Monday midnight and Tuesday midnight, Kanlaon also emitted ash seven times, with each episode lasting from one to 123 minutes.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, which indicates increased unrest. Phivolcs reminded the public of possible hazards such as steam-driven or phreatic explosions.
Entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited, and aircraft are advised to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit.
