The Department of Migrant Workers has confirmed that the Filipino seafarer injured in the recent Red Sea attack has fully recovered and was set to return to the Philippines yesterday.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac, who traveled to Djibouti, announced the development Thursday evening, saying all arrangements for the seafarer’s return have been completed.
As of press time, details on the seafarer’s arrival have yet to be released.
Cacdac also visited a morgue in Djibouti to oversee the repatriation of another Filipino crew member who died in the same incident involving the MV Minervagracht.
The Philippine Embassy in Cairo, through Chargé d’Affaires Crystal Dunuan, is coordinating with local authorities to expedite the return of the deceased seafarer, whose remains are expected to arrive in the Philippines within two weeks.
According to the DMW, the seafarer’s wife will stay in Djibouti until she can accompany the remains home.
The MV Minervagracht was struck by an explosive device on 29 September. The vessel carried 19 crew members — including Russians, Ukrainians, Sri Lankans, and Filipinos. Ten Filipino crew members were repatriated on 4 October aboard Air France Flight 224.
Following his visit to Djibouti, Cacdac proceeded to London with DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan for the OFW Caravan and meetings with the Filipino community.
