SM Cares is intensifying its coastal cleanup efforts across the country in preparation for the rainy season, mobilizing thousands of volunteers to remove waste that can worsen flooding and other hazards.

From January to June 2025, SM Cares engaged 8,571 volunteers who collected more than 70,887 kilograms of trash from shorelines and waterways.

The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to disaster resilience and environmental protection, as clogged waterways and marine pollution can exacerbate the impact of heavy rainfall.

“This isn’t just about picking up trash — it’s about saving homes, safeguarding health, and helping communities become more resilient to the floods and diseases that come with the rainy season,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Cares program director for the Environment.

“The work we do today has a direct impact on the safety of families tomorrow,” she added.

The coastal cleanups serve a dual purpose — protecting marine ecosystems while also reducing the risk of flooding and waterborne diseases in nearby communities.

Looking ahead, SM Cares is calling on the public to join its largest cleanup yet on 20 September for International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The event, which is part of SM Supermalls’ 40th anniversary celebration, aims to attract 40,000 volunteers nationwide. The main event will be held at SM by the BAY.
