From “Top Gun” to “Freakier Friday,” the Filipino actor embraces his roots as he rises in global stardom
“I am Manny Jacinto, and I am proud to be Filipino.”
With those heartfelt words on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Hollywood actor Manny Jacinto reaffirmed his deep connection to his Filipino heritage, a connection that continues to shape both his personal journey and flourishing international career.
Best known for his breakout role as the hilarious Jason Mendoza in The Good Place, Manny has since carved a distinct space in Hollywood. He has appeared alongside the likes of Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, joined the Star Wars universe in The Acolyte, and now headlines the highly anticipated sequel Freakier Friday, where he stars as the romantic lead opposite Lindsay Lohan.
From Cebu Roots to Global Screens
Born in Manila and raised in Canada, Manny has always carried with him the passion and resilience Filipinos are known for. In his interview with the King of Talk, he shared how his cultural background played a pivotal role in his artistic development.
“I think that’s the beauty of Filipinos, we love to perform. We love to sing, we love to dance, we love to act,” Manny said.
This innate joy in storytelling and performance has fueled Manny’s success in an industry where Filipino representation has long been underrepresented. And yet, Manny stands tall, now a leading man in a major studio film, a milestone not just for him but for Filipinos everywhere.
A Dream to Tell Filipino Stories
Despite his success abroad, Manny has never strayed far from his roots. In fact, he dreams of returning to the Philippines, not just to act but to create. He revealed that he is currently developing a script set in the country.
“I think the actual goal is I’m trying to write and create stories that I hope could actually film in the Philippines. So yeah, both, whether to act here or to create stories to act here.”
He teased a project inspired by sabong, the traditional Filipino cockfighting sport, framing it within a compelling family drama. Though he remained tight-lipped about the details, he confirmed it’s a story close to his heart.
“It revolves around sabong. It’s a family story. I can’t say too much because it’s still in the works, but yeah, something along those lines.”
Dream Collaborations and Filipino Icons
When asked which Filipino artists he’d love to work with, Manny didn’t hesitate. Lea Salonga was at the top of his list. He also expressed a deep admiration for the late Dolphy, calling the comedy legend one of his biggest childhood influences.
“If he was still alive, Dolphy would have been incredible,” he shared. “He was a pretty big part of my childhood. Watching those Filipino movies, especially Home Along Da Riles, really helped shape my comedy.”
From Global Star to Cultural Ambassador Manny’s latest role as the charming love interest of Lindsay Lohan in Freakier Friday is more than just another entry on his growing filmography. It’s a symbol of how far he’s come and how much further he can go. Set to hit theaters nationwide, the film marks a new chapter in his career and one that he’s determined to share with his fellow Filipinos.
Whether it’s through acting, writing, or advocating for better representation, Manny Jacinto remains anchored in the values and stories of his heritage.
“I am proud to be Filipino,” he said once more. And with every role he takes on, the world is listening.
