Celebrated designer Rajo Laurel has lent his creative touch to the Philippine production of Into the Woods, crafting the costumes for none other than Lea Salonga’s portrayal of “The Witch.”
Laurel shared on Facebook that the project was a dream come true, as the musical has long been one of his favorites. The opportunity came through artistic director Clint Ramos, who envisioned a distinctly Filipino interpretation. Working alongside costume designer Raven Ong, Laurel drew inspiration from local culture and nature—incorporating the iconic anahaw plant into Act One’s reveal and evoking the elegance of Santa Cruzan festivals.
For Act Two, the design shifted to a deeper green palette, with intricate embroidery of Philippine foliage and vegetables reminiscent of the Bahay Kubo song. True to theatrical tradition, Laurel also crafted two dramatic capes for Salonga, ensuring The Witch’s presence was as commanding as her voice.
“It was such an honour to be involved,” Laurel wrote, reflecting on his own beginnings in theater alongside Salonga. “Thank you for trusting all of us at House of Laurel. Maraming, maraming salamat!”
