
The administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has successfully abolished a reward system that previously incentivized corruption and illegal drug recycling among law enforcement officers, according to Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
During post-State of the Nation Address (SoNA) discussions, Remulla asserted that the past reward system encouraged drug enforcers to aggressively pursue anti-drug operations, sometimes leading to the killing of drug suspects and planting of evidence to claim cash rewards.
He also cited “ninja cops” who would reportedly keep up to 90 percent of confiscated drugs, turning over only 10 percent to authorities and reselling the rest.
Remulla said Marcos dismantled this system by ordering a halt to “bodega” operations to prevent the hoarding of illegal drugs and implementing a no-reward policy.
