CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — The Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3) has relieved officers involved in a viral road confrontation with a truck driver, following public outcry over the incident.
In a statement issued 19 July, PRO3 Regional Director Police Brig. Gen. Ponce Rogelio Peñones addressed the video, which showed a heated exchange between a truck driver and police officers in Pampanga. The driver had reportedly honked at a police mobile unit that made a sudden turn from the center lane into the opposing lane — prompting the police to flag him down.
“We acknowledge the circulation of the video involving our personnel and a truck driver who was flagged down after allegedly honking at a police mobile unit due to a sudden maneuver,” Peñones said.
“While we understand the driver’s reaction, we would like to clarify that the action of our personnel was based on their immediate judgment at the time to ensure road safety and order,” he explained, adding, “Nevertheless, we recognize that such situations should always be approached with professionalism, calmness and respect.”
Peñones confirmed that the personnel involved have been temporarily relieved from their posts as a thorough investigation is underway. “Should any lapses be confirmed, appropriate administrative measures will be implemented,” he said.
The viral video, widely shared on social media, sparked debate over the officers’ actions. Many netizens criticized the police for what they called a “reckless” maneuver, saying the truck driver’s horn was a natural reaction to avoid a potential accident. Others questioned the decision to flag the driver down, with some calling it an abuse of authority.
Still, several online users urged restraint and professionalism, especially from uniformed personnel expected to serve and protect the public.
PRO3 assured the public that the matter is being taken seriously and reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within the ranks.
