Two people were killed early Saturday morning after a speeding vehicle jumped the curb and struck pedestrians in Manhattan’s Chinatown, according to a report by CBS News.
The incident occurred around 7:30 AM at the intersection of Canal Street and Broadway. Authorities said a blue Chevrolet Malibu was traveling westbound at high speed on the Manhattan Bridge before entering Manhattan.
Police said the vehicle veered onto the sidewalk, hitting a male cyclist and a female pedestrian. The car also collided with an unoccupied NYPD van parked nearby.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene and pronounced both victims dead.
According to the New York Police Department, the driver and a passenger attempted to flee the scene on foot. Witnesses nearby immediately pointed them out to officers, leading to their swift arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing.
