MMDA calls for calm, dialogue as road safety policies spark public concern

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Romando Artes assured the public that their concerns about road safety and traffic regulations are being carefully considered by the agency.

Amid mounting complaints over recent policies such as the motorcycle lane rule and the No Contact Apprehension Program, Artes emphasized that the MMDA remains committed to addressing the issues raised by both motorists and commuters.

“As much as possible, we are doing our best to serve you,” Artes said. “We may not be able to solve everything right away, but rest assured, we are working on your concerns.”

He also appealed for constructive engagement from the public, explaining that respectful discussions are essential in finding common ground. “This is the right opportunity for you to convey your needs to us. Let’s talk respectfully. We don’t want conflict, we are here to work with you,” Artes added.

While criticisms continue to circulate online, Artes defended the agency’s traffic measures, clarifying that they are meant to promote discipline and safety on the roads. He pointed to a recent incident involving a motorcyclist struck by a bus in an accident-prone area as a reminder of why these regulations are necessary.

“What we want is discipline. We want to prevent accidents and keep our roads safe for everyone,” Artes said.

He acknowledged that the MMDA has been closely monitoring public feedback on social media. According to Artes, they listen to the posts and comments of riders and are trying to act on the matter despite certain limitations.

As the dialogue continues, Artes underscored that the MMDA’s efforts are focused on protecting the public and making Metro Manila’s roads safer for all.
