First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos sat down with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to check on the construction of two bridges that would connect three island provinces in Western Visayas.

“Met again with officials on the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges Project… only to learn that it would take even longer than expected,” she said. The bridges’ construction is set to begin by July 2026.
Officials of DPWH Region 6 said the Panay-Guimaras bridge would require a deeper foundation, leading to changes in its original design. Once completed, travel time between the islands would be reduced from four hours to less than one hour.
Despite the delays, Mrs. Marcos remains confident the project will continue as planned.
She stressed that improved inter-island connectivity would unlock more opportunities for trade, tourism and economic growth across Western Visayas.
Followers of the First Lady echoed her sentiments and were optimistic about the bridge’s construction.
“It’s disappointing to hear about the delays, but good things take time. Let’s stay hopeful,” one user said.
“It’s crucial to invest in infrastructure. Delays are frustrating, but we need quality work for lasting benefits,” another commented.
One user hopes to visit the islands for a vacation.
“Cutting travel time from four hours to under one hour is incredible! It’ll make weekend getaways much easier,” the follower said.
The Section A segment of the bridge connecting Panay and Guimaras will have a total length of 13.616 kilometers, while Section B connecting Guimaras to Negros will stretch 19.47 kilometers.
