The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is considering suspending its preparations for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in December.

This comes after both the Senate and the House of Representatives ratified on 11 June the bicameral conference committee report on the bill extending the term of incumbent barangay and SK officials from three to six years.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the poll body will hold an emergency meeting next week to discuss which of the preparations for the elections should be stopped first.

Garcia said one example is the purchase of indelible ink because of the possibility that it will expire if the elections are completely suspended.

“For example, procurement, there are things which shouldn’t be bought right away becausse they might expire, like indelible ink,” he said.

“Others can be postponed, like the voter registration set on 1 to 11 July,” he added.

He said they will discuss the budget for postponing the voter registration.

If the BSKE election is rescheduled, Garcia said the Comelec may opt to hold a longer voter registration period after the October Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliamentary elections until August next year.
