In the aftermath of a fire that displaced families in Barangay Sto. Niño, Tanauan, Leyte, the Malasakit Team of Senator Christopher “Bong” Go brought both aid and assurance on 27 May, reinforcing his call for stronger fire prevention and housing resilience for vulnerable communities.
Thirteen families who lost their homes in the fire gathered at the barangay gymnasium to receive grocery packs, vitamins, shirts, and snacks from Go’s team. More than just relief goods, the team also brought a message of encouragement straight from the senator.
“Do not lose hope. Your belongings can be replaced, but life cannot. A lost life is lost forever,” Go said in a video message. “Let us help one another. Who else will do that but us, fellow Filipinos? I will continue to serve you to the best of my ability.”
He also underscored the vital role of grassroots leaders in ensuring swift and inclusive aid during crises. “I have only one request to barangay officials: Do not neglect the poor. Your offices should always be open to those in need,” he said.
Go reaffirmed his support for fire-affected communities by pushing for long-term housing solutions. He filed Senate Bill No. 192, which seeks to create a Rental Housing Subsidy Program that would provide temporary shelter assistance to disaster victims while they transition to permanent homes.
The senator also cited two laws that reflect his legislative commitment to disaster resilience. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Modernization Act of 2021 aims to enhance fire prevention and emergency response through upgraded training, equipment, and staffing. Meanwhile, the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act mandates the establishment of permanent evacuation centers in every city and municipality.
The relief operation in Tanauan was made possible through the support of Mayor Gina Merilo and Barangay Captain Alex Miralles, who helped ensure that assistance reached the most affected residents.
“We will continue to serve because public service is my calling. I believe that serving the people is also serving God, it is serving Allah,” Go said, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to uplifting Filipinos in times of need.
