The 128 barangays of Baguio City have begun preparations as the "habagat" or southwest monsoon signals the start of the rainy season across the country.
Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) Baguio President Rocky Aliping said that officials in each barangay are now implementing mitigation measures in anticipation of heavy rains and typhoons. He noted that Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) functions have been activated at the barangay level.
Aliping said appropriate screens and other materials needed to prevent garbage from clogging canals and waterways have already been installed. He added that additional screens have been placed in canals leading to the City Camp Lagoon, which has experienced flooding in the past due to garbage and debris blocking water flow.
In addition to regular monitoring, barangay officials are intensifying information campaigns to educate residents on the importance of proper waste disposal and the dangers of throwing trash into canals and waterways.
Local barangay units are also inspecting dead trees and overhanging branches for trimming or removal to prevent accidents, especially during strong weather disturbances.
